Tallahassee, FL - Jameis Winston threw for 297 yards and accounted for two touchdowns, and No. 1 Florida State overcame another slow start before rolling to a 43-3 victory over Wake Forest at Doak Campbell Stadium. After rallying from a 17-point first-quarter deficit to topple North Carolina State a week ago, the Seminoles (5-0, 3-0 ACC) ripped off 40 unanswered points to turn a game that was tied at 3-3 late in the opening half into an all-out rout. Florida State got contributions from all phases in its 21st consecutive win. Winston threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Travis Rudolph and ran for a score, Roberto Aguayo tied a school record by drilling five field goals and a stifling defence forced three turnovers while limiting the Demon Deacons to 126 total yards. Very proud of our defence today. I thought they were outstanding, said Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher. Thought they tackled, kept contain, did their thing. I mean, totally dominated the game. Winston made good on 23-of-39 throws with an interception, while Mario Pender rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown on just five carries. John Wolford mustered a mere 58 passing yards on a 9-of-15 completion rate and was intercepted once for Wake Forest (2-4, 0-2) before being removed in the second half. Dezmond Wortham ran for 68 yards on 12 attempts in the loss. Against a team like that we just get overwhelmed, Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson remarked. Especially when we are on offense and they are on defence. The Seminoles turned the ball over on their initial two possessions and managed just a field goal through their first four, but were finally able to reach the end zone near the end of the opening half. After getting the ball back at midfield following a Wake Forest punt, Winston completed two straight passes and Pender broke off a 12-yard run to put Florida State at the opposing 9-yard line. Three plays later, Winston rolled out and faked a throw before diving across the goal line from two yards out to give the Seminoles a 10-3 lead with 1:03 left in the half. Wake Forest could only take 31 seconds off the clock before punting it away again, and Rashad Greene returned the kick 16 yards to the Deacons 40. Two Winston connections to Jesus Wilson put Aguayo in range to knock through a 40- yard field goal that pushed the Seminoles advantage to 10 points at intermission. Winston then began the second half by hitting on three straight attempts, including an 18-yard strike to Nick OLeary, to position Aguayo for a successful 52-yard try that increased the margin to 16-3. The Seminoles defence continued to impose its will from there. Wolford was picked off by P.J. Williams while under heavy pressure midway through the third quarter, with the 23-yard return deep into Wake territory leading to Penders 3-yard touchdown scamper. Florida State needed just 15 seconds to produce its next touchdown, as Reggie Northup dislodged Isaiah Robinson of the ball on the Deacons ensuing drive and returned the fumble 31 yards to stake the Seminoles to a commanding 30-3 advantage with just under five minutes left in the third. Aguayos fourth make of the day, a 42-yarder less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, came after Winston found Ermon Lane down the sideline for a 59-yard gain. After the defence induced yet another Wake Forest punt, Randolph blew past the secondary to haul in Winstons on-target deep ball for a 59-yard score and a 40-3 lead. A 56-yard run from Pender enabled Aguayo to hit field goal No. 5, a 32-yarder with 4:53 to play. That last kick extended the reigning Groza Award winners streak of consecutive successful 3-pointers to a school-record 21 straight. I didnt even know (about the streak) until after the game, said Aguayo. I didnt think I was going to kick five field goals. I am happy for that. The Demon Deacons were held to a paltry 27 yards of offense over the first two quarters, 22 of which came on Brandon Terrys catch-and-run on 3rd-and-11 that set up Mike Weavers 36-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead late in the first. Wake Forest began that drive in FSU territory after Karlos Williams had the ball knocked free by Josh Banks and the Deacons recovered. Winston was intercepted by Merrill Noel on a deflected ball on the Seminoles opening series, and Wake Forest got inside the Florida State 20 before Wolford was sacked by Mario Edwards Jr. and lost a fumble. The Seminoles pulled even by stringing together an 11-play, 49-yard sequence that ended in Aguayos 43-yard field goal early in the second quarter. Winston and Greene hooked up for three catches totaling 33 yards on the trek. Game Notes The last FSU kicker to make five field goals in a game was Gary Cismesia against Miami on Oct. 20, 2007 ... Gordon Hayward chipped in 21 points and Derrick Favors had 15 along with seven rebounds to help the Jazz send the Southwest Division-leading Grizzlies to a season-high third straight loss. This is huge for us, Jazz forward Rodney Hood said. For us to come out like this and beat a great Memphis team means a lot. Its been a long road trip, and this can be a confidence booster for us. Memphis was without top rebounder Zach Randolph for a second consecutive game due to a swollen knee, while defensive stopper Tony Allen missed his fourth in a row with an eye abrasion. Theyre such a big part of our team, said Grizzlies guard Mike Conley. For them to be missing, weve kind of dialed some stuff back and changed some things up and its been a little bit of a learning process for different guys. Conley and Marc Gasol did their best to carry the load for the short-handed Grizzlies, with the former netting 28 points and Gasol tallying 24 along with 12 rebounds. However, Memphis shot just 32 percent for the fourth quarter as the Jazz drew clear down the stretch. Rudy Gobert pulled down a career-best 16 rebounds in Utahs third win in four games following a 1-12 stretch from Nov. 21-Dec. 16. A nip-and-tuck game all throughout had the Grizzlies up 77-75 on Gasols short jumper with 5:31 remaining, but Utah then went on a 12-4 run and never relinquished the lead thereafter. Burks had the Jazzs first five points of the pivotal surge, including a successful pull-up that placed Utah ahead by an 80-79 count. Favors followed with four straight to extend the marggin to five with 3 1/2 minutes to go.dddddddddddd After a Conley layup off a Gasol give got the Grizzlies closer, Trey Burke was fouled while hitting a driving layup and converted the bonus shot for an 87-81 Utah advantage with 1:34 left. Conley buried a corner 3-pointer on the ensuing possession, but Burks scored on the other end and after Memphis Courtney Lee misfired from long range, Hayward knocked down two free throws to essentially seal the outcome at 91-84 with 40.3 seconds remaining. Defensively, we were not all tied together, Gasol said. At least not every possession. They got some runs. We knew they were good. We knew they were long and athletic. They did a good job tonight, and thats why they won the game. The Jazz played from behind for much of the first half but finished the second quarter on a tear, embarking on an 8-0 run capped by Haywards buzzer-beating turnaround jumper to grab a 44-43 edge at the break. A 7-0 sequence midway through the third quarter staked Utah to a 63-57 cushion. However, Conley, who poured in 13 points during the frame, and Gasol headed an 11-4 stretch that had Memphis back in front with a minute to go in the stanza. Memphis was up by as many as eight points in the first half, building an early 18-10 lead primarily behind Gasols eight points in the opening eight minutes.
